Default Keeping characters from trial to full?

I recently bought the trial version of Guild Wars and have seriously considered buying the game. I understand you can keep your characters in the full version that you created in the trial (at current levels and weapons), but wasn't sure if you need a specific campaign to keep those characters. The trial has all three campaigns, and I believe I've created a character in both Prophecies and Nightfall.

May I ask where you got these trials?

Not 100% sure, but I think, in order to keep a character you started in a particular campaign, you'll need to buy that campaign to keep using it. So, if you started a character in Nightfall, but then you only buy Prophecies, you won't be able to use the Nightfall character. You should be able to access any of the weapons/gear they have collected (but not their armor), however, if you put it all in storage before the trial ends.

Gamestop. I paid $2.00 for the CD. I bought it after finishing a trial CD for Final Fantasy XI. I thought both are great games, but only one won't cost me after the initial purchase.

What do you mean by "storage" (I'm still in the learning process)? Does that include the animal you have as Ranger class?

Storage is the Xunlai agent and Xunlai chest. It allows you to transfer items from one character to another, as well as a place to empty out your backpack for collectible goods.

Your characters will carry over from trial to full version, so long as you buy the character's home campaign. So be sure to but the right edition of the game, or else you'll be staring at your toon in the startup screen with a big red box that says you can't play with him.

I checked and both of my created characters were for prophecies, so that should make things easier. I haven't gotten to the Xunlai region yet, and I'm not sure how much longer I have before the trial expires.

Xunlai can only be found once you go through the academy quest, which is a one way trip. But if you buy prophecies first, it won't matter anyway.

If you started characters in Prophecies, you are probably still in "Pre-Searing", which is just the starting learner section. You won't have access to storage, so you'll have to keep everything you want with you.
Once you go through the Academy, you'll go to "post-searing" and be able to access the storage. (Xunlai is not a region, it's more like a self-storage company. )
You can't keep your Ranger's pet in storage, but it doesn't go away either. As long as you have [wiki]Charm Animal[/wiki] in your skill bar, your pet goes with you. If you remove CA from your skill bar, your pet stays home, but it comes back when you put CA back in. Also, if Ranger is your secondary and you change your secondary later, the pet will still be there if you change your secondary back to Ranger later.

Funny thing about the charm animal. When I was "strolling" around the outter regions I thought I'd be able to charm the black bear, but then I learned A) You can't have two animals at once B) you can't simply "disable" charm animal to send your pet packing and C) the "tamer" won't give you much for your animal unless it's highly leveled.

The tamer doesn't give you much for your animal period. 100g is the max you get

Btw, the Black Bear in Pre-searing is very difficult, but not impossible, to charm.

I've never tried this, but if you "disable" Charm Animal before you leave town, does the pet come with you? And does the pet act normally even if you disable CA "in the field"?

Been there, tried that lol. Merely disabling 'Charm Animal' in the town just means that you won't have your pet with you outside, but I believe once you enable it again, it reappears.

By the way, I found that storage chest you mentioned, so thanks for letting me know. Chances are I'll probably forget about it by the time I buy the retail version of the game though.

I have another question though. What's the difference between a party and a guild? I've gone on a couple of missions with members that I invited, but haven't joined a guild yet.

A party is just whoever you group with for a quest or a mission. This includes other players or the henchmen that you take. They are all party members.

A guild is like an organization of (hopefully) like-minded players that you join. When you join a guild, you get a cape (which you can toggle off if you don't like the looks of it.) You get access to your guild's hall, which is like a central meeting area that everyone in your guild can reach from anywhere. You also get a group of people that you get to know well and have fun with.

I suggest that you don't accept random invites or go for recruitment spam. Eventually the right guild will find you.

Well I was the "tourist" so-to-speak trying to recruit some people to join my party in a mission. Last night I actually got this female Elementalist (sp) by the name of Poison something to go with me. I took the healer with me which helped a bit. The Poison girl led me through until one point I think she just died and I was too far behind to resurrect her.

I have two characters in Prophecies, a male W/R and a female R/E. I found a place online where I could get Factions for more than $10 less than it's sold at stores, but I don't know if I'd be able to keep my characters. On one of the Guild Wars FAQs, it suggests that you would be able to keep levels, skills, and inventory between campaigns; so I'm assuming that goes for characters developed in trial accounts.

There's a Xunlai chest in every town/outpost, so you don't need to worry about forgetting where it is. Many outposts have a "Xunlai Agent" too, who you talk to get access to Xunlai storage and/or upgrade it.

If you don't buy Prophecies, you won't be able to use your Prophecies character in Factions. What the FAQ refers to is that if you buy more than one campaign, your characters can move freely between them and they keep all of the skills, and gear they've collected. But, characters started in a trial of a campaign can't be used until you buy that campaign - but you can always start new characters in Factions. And, you can put any gear (weapons, etc.) you want to keep into storage before the trial ends, and they will still be in storage when you start Factions.
Btw - if you do buy any of the campaigns be sure to add the keys to your existing account, otherwise you won't be able to move between them.
For example, if you were to buy Factions, there's no need to "install" Factions as such. Just add the access key to your current account and voila, you have Factions.

Actually I purchased a copy of Factions online and apparently they were out of stock because they immediately refunded my money. Right now I'm content with purchasing Prophecies (game of the year edition), which is more available in stores and is an average of $10 cheaper than the other campaigns. I can enjoy the game with my original characters and would be none the wiser. If sometime down the road I would like to buy another campaign, I'd consider it then.

I just purchased the GOTY edition of Guild Wars. Do I have to install anything or should everything be there from my Trial CD?

You've already installed it. If it needs to, the client will download what it's missing (or you can -image to download everything you're missing).

Trial CD won't have everything, especially not when there's been updates between its release and now.

So what would you recommend are the steps I should take? I haven't even opened the box yet. It's brand new. Is it just a matter of getting the access key from the new game and using it with the pre-installed software from the Trial CD? I have two leveled characters that I used with a handful of weapons I don't want to lose.
